Applied Materials Intranet IS&T
Web Site
The
intranet IS&T
Web sites for Applied follow design and navigation templates
that my department set up several years ago and have been
refining as needed. My staff and I also set up a corporate intranet
publishing service plan, publishing process & guidelines,
and determined publishing tools, and hosting requirements.
We built publishing libraries for site templates, cascading styles,
graphics, and programming for corporate intranet sites to use.
Many of the following sites deliberately follow the design guidelines.

Applied
Anywhere Intranet Web Site
This
is just one of several concepts I developed for a new site
within Applied Materials that explains a new program that allows
employees to work from home. We were striving to keep some
of the navigational elements that employees know, but give
it a different approach. This is basically a Change Mangement
site that assists employees and managers with making the transition
from a more structured on-site work environment to a less structured,
remote work environment.

Applied Materials Intranet
Global Help Desk Web Site
Just completed, this site
replaces an old site where information was very difficult to
find. And again we "wrapped" the Help Desk Web site around
a new ticket application so its use is seamless to employees.

Applied Materials Intranet Telephone
Web Site
The old
Telecom Web site that
this replaced got about 6000 page views per month. The Phone Directory
which was a separate Lotus Notes database got a lot of traffic. I
pulled the LN Phone Directory database into an iFrame
within the Telecom site. The site now instructs employees on how
to use the Communication tools like NetMeeting, eMeeting, and Voice
Mail. The site gets over 1/2 million pages views per month and is
the most used site in the company.
The site's
navigation is based on an interface that is very scalable. There are 3 levels of navigation in the horizontal bar and an additional 2 in the left vertical navigation.

Applied Materials
Intranet IS&T News Web Site
For several years, the IS&T
department sent out a newsletter every other month to the corporation
on what "eBusiness Solutions" had accomplished and to educate employees
about IS&T services. The newletter was dubbed "eBuzz Solutions".
I spearheaded a cross functional team of about 5 to 10 employees
to produce this.

M. Levy, San Jose State U. Class Site
This site is a prototype site
for an instructor at San Jose State University to provide course
notes, assignments, and quizzes for his accounting classes. Unfortunately,
Mr. Levy was relieved of his teaching duties before the site could
be put into production.

The 3 Tenors Concert
Luciano Pavarotti, Placido
Domingo, and Jose Carros toured the United States during 2000. YBP
developed the site and provided audio and video clips of the program.
The main goals for this initial site were
1. Advertise the new star competition
2. Promote the upcoming webcast of the 3 Tenors
3. Pre-register users for the webcast.

UCSC Extension
This site is University of
California's online catalog where the viewer can sign up for courses
offered through their Extension program. We helped the UCSC Extension
web team take their printed catalog and put it online. There are
over 600 pages to this site so just getting that number of pages
up at the same time as the catalog is going to print is a formidable
task. This is accomplished by using a Quark plug-in called Beyond
Press which translates the styles in the printed catalog into HTML
styles specified by the web developer. The Beyond Press translations
includes a search query for each course number which refers to the
database of all of the courses. Like any project, not everything
works quite the way it is intended, so there is a lot of hand clean
up work involved in getting this site up and functioning properly.

Silicon Valley Webgrrls
The Silicon Valley Webgrrls
was part of an international organization of over 20,000 women whose
profession is connected to the Internet, www, or multimedia. The challenge
for this site was that it needed to set a standard of Web excellence
and
yet still be easy to maintain and expand as this organization's needs
grew. Ms. Lewis headed up the SVW Website committee for
3 years. However,
much of the credit goes to the group of about 30 volunteers who participated
in the site. The group was divided into functional groups such as content,
design, and programming. Most of this site was created, tested, and
put in production within a one month time frame to coincide with the
2nd anniversary of the local chapter in May, 1999. The key committee
members stayed very active in maintaining and improving this site over
the years.
It was a truly inspiring group of women with which to work.

Ventures Extraordinaire
VEI provided cruises
and tours for over 30 years. We first did their site in 1999 and
updated the content for several years before the company was
sold to another agency. Their 60 page catalog was updated
once a year, so putting a web site up with the most current prices
provided their customers with current prices and trip schedules. The
site structure allows the viewer to see the
index of different tours and cruises as well as the specific tours
and still get around to all parts of the site.

I-Tox Consulting
This site is for a forensic toxicology
service that specializes in three areas. An animated gif on the front
page emphasizes each field of specialization. The purpose of the site
is to advertise the level of expertise and unique qualities of I-Tox to
the legal profession. We created an "Ask the Expert" page where viewers
can send in their questions. That area also has a "Tip of the Month" where
I-Tox can show off its expertise. We created a section called "In the
News" that will draw busy lawyers back to this site to find out what is
currently happening in this field. This site is not quite finished yet,
but close enough to give you an idea of the navigational structure and
design concepts. We have just a little more content to add to it before
we post it.

Yowzah Baby! Productions Web Site
How
was the 3 dimensional
pencil on the home page created anyway? What is that cool font used
in the titles? This section gives you information about the site your
in. For those who would rather "do-it-yourself", it provides links to sites to help you create your own
site and places of interest like web publications and how to market
your site once it's up. Be sure to check out our recommended
books page. We cover books on design, programming, and software
applications. A site that is full of valuable web design help is Joe
Gillespie's site at Pixel Productions' Web
Page Design
